Know Before
You HEad OUT
Hunters are required to successfully complete hunter education prior to purchasing a hunting license, tag, or permit if born on or after January 1, 1975.
It’s the hunter’s responsibility to have in their possession the required license and a tag or permit depending on the species or weapon. Be sure to review Idaho’s hunting seasons and rules to ensure you’re acting within the law.

Why We Hunt
For many new hunters, meat can be the main motivator to start. As time goes on and the hunter’s skills begin to sharpen, it becomes more than just the meat.
01
WORLD-CLASS CONSERVATION. By the early 1900’s many of North America’s wildlife species were in peril due to unregulated commercial hunting. Eventually, it was conservation-minded hunters that pioneered the North American Model of Conservation. Under this model, hunters paid for the regulation and conservation of wildlife through self-imposed fees on hunting. Nearly 100 years later this model remains the primary funding for wildlife conservation and is likely responsible for saving many species from being endangered.
02
CONNECTION. Being a participant in nature gives hunters a deeper connection. Senses become hyper-focused and the world around them moves differently than if they were spectator out for a hike. Plus, sharing the experience with a friend or family member can make the experience even more memorable.
If you know someone that wants to learn how to hunt, consider taking them under your wing and have them sign up for the Hunting Passport Program.
03
THE REWARD. There is something primal about overcoming challenges, and hunting provides both physical and mental challenges when working to outsmart wild game. While success can be measured by a harvest, hunters embrace the process and revel in the close calls that create opportunities to learn. When success does happen, hunters’ reverence for their food is unmatched. Discover new recipe ideas.
